Ted Williams, the "best hitter of all time" as some people are calling him, died at the age of 83 today. He was the last batter to hit .400 in a season.

He spit at the fans and vowed to never tip his cap to them no matter how much they cheered for him. He hit line drives at fans that jeered him, etc.

Still a great baseball player. Maybe the purest hitter ever.

I heard he got boo'ed(sp) pretty badly when he was a rookie and because of that, said he'd never tip his hat to them again, but I didn't know he spit at people and hit line drives at them!
But yeah, a great hitter. It'll probably be a while before someone hits .400 again.

I'm not familiar with the more specific things in baseball so could you guys clear this up for me??? It seems similar to Bradman's 99.4 strike rate in cricket.

You mean the .400 stat? That means he got a hit 40 percent of the time.

So in other words if he had 100 at bats, he got 40 hits.
