why is awd 10/90 frowned apon

This. Everyone else needs to take a moment to re-assess their lives. Seriously. Its a game, its meant to be fun. If you're going sideways then who cares what setup the car has?

Some people do need to take that post seriously.. Some GTpers have gone salty when it comes down to AWD.

lol.

Someday when you're better at drifting (in GT5) you'll think back to this post and give yourself a mental facepalm.

In all of my years on forums this is the first time I have had to do this. Daus is NOT a newbe to drifting and has great skill. He is my team mate and I will not stand by and allow some one to bad mouth him because they "think" he not a good drifter. My advice is don't talk smack about someone you don't know, or never drifted with or against. Someday you will look back on your post and think to yourself "damn that wasn't cool I should have worded that differently".

The point is, RWD drifters get it while the AWD drivers can't comprehend why they're being outcast.

I drift RWD, I rally and grip AWD. I'm not against the AWD system as a whole... just when it comes to drifting.

Who in their right minds ever seriously thought, "I'm going to take this vehicle, that is praised for its AWD system that was built entirely to increase traction and promote super-glue effects to the road, and disregard all their hard work by making it do exactly the opposite of what it was intended to do?"

How many RWD vehicles compete in rally? Why are the cars that are respected the most for their AWD systems built around rally instead of drifting? Every car has its place, end of discussion.

well i came into one of those rooms where they kick you if you are not using a RWD car, then i asked them why they would want to force someone to change their car in the game. and this was their reply. "you have to drive a RWD car because we do". to be honest i godly hate people that make you do something because that is the way they do it. we all like to drift our own ways, some like D1 and some like Ken Block. for once can we all just get along?

Yeah, we can get along for sure. But horse riders and football players probably get along, doesn't mean they want to share a pitch with each other :)

They are to seperate disiplines at the end of the day, which are best suited to different tracks and differents speeds. Therefore, they aren't very compatible.

I agree although when they try to say that in D1 they used 4WD cars and ken blocks cars are rwd. They are almost asking to be let go, if they argue with me about it, frankly it gets very frustrating.

i believe that people should be able to drift what they want. i think it kind of sucks thats people are being kicked from rooms just because they want to drift a different car than what everybody else is drifting. in one session with me and my brother's team. i was drifting my r32 skyline and my brother was drifting his 33 skyline. we changed the settings to 10/90 because we want them to be as close to RWD as possible. many cars are converted to rwd in real life but since we do not have the ability to do that then we just try the next best thing. which is a 10/90 split because im not going to stop drifting certain cars just because some people believe its not true drifting. i just hope that people can accept others opinions and not have to be kicked out of rooms. keep drifting fun everybody so we can enjoy it the way it needs to be enjoyed. in my brother and i's team we allow anybody to drift whatever they want, from the daihitsu midget to a ford rs200. keep drifting fun so we can all have fun.

While I do believe that people should be able to drift what they want if Im host of the lobby and I say no AWD, or FR cars only and you dont abide then the boot comes. Its simple. If you dont wanna be kicked for using AWD or whatever you want to use then make youre own lobby.

AWD is not superglue. AWD merely allows you to induce understeer to pull out of a slide more easily. Which is why it is banned in some drift contests.

Thus, AWD is, like ABS and traction control, merely the victim of the need to artificially limit competitors to make the contest a better spectacle, nothing more.

If you walk into a room of old-school rally enthusiasts and told them that "if it's not AWD, it's not rally...", you'll get a lot of laughs. You're telling them that the Escort, the Stratos and even the original Lancer GSR are not true rally cars!

Next thing you know, people will be claiming a front-wheel drive vehicle can't be a true sports car... :D

The 10/90 that GT5 has, that drifters use, makes the car able to slide, and its really easy.

The car drifts faster causing the 4wd car to ruin all tandem drifts it goes into.

The front wheels usually dont break traction and therefore grip quite a lot (only 10% power) so pull you out and forwards effectively.

I don't like 4wd cars being anywhere near me in drift lobbys, for example.
The last corner at Tsukuba... I look behind just before entering, I see an evo, I think, "I'm about to get punted off here" oh and what happened ?

Mr 4wd car decided to 4get he drifts about 30mph faster than me and 4gets my car has substance, hitting me, forcing me off, and then not saying sorry.
Well done Mr 4wd car.

THAT'S why 4wd cars should be able to be banned from lobbies in the lobby restrictions.
Just in the same way you could have only 4wd car Drift lobbies.

Someone called Adz (in D-Trick team) used to drift an R32 on GT5 and was very good, able to keep his speed down and everything, we could tandem with him easily.
But people like him are rare and even he has changed to RWD now.

I know it's only a game, but it is a game that quite a lot of people want to try and use to simulate real life drifting without having to go out and risk your car and money doing so.
When people want to use it to simulate real-life drifting from the likes of D1GP. People entering in 4wd cars ruins the whole thing. Therefore they get asked to change.

you guys make it seem like drifting RWD is difficult, i switch between AWD/RWD because of the car, not the drivetrain, if it happens to be 10/90 who cares?

The general issue with these people is they take it too seriously and treat it like GT5 is a professional sport and that there are rules for how we play.

Feel bad about being kicked out by the room host because they said u drive 4wd?

Why don't u think of this way:
This is other people's room, they set up the rules, and if u don't follow, it's obvious that they will kick u out. This is like driving the X2010 in a racing room where everyone are driving street cars, period.

Excellent point Kaizer. Here is a good rule of thumb I use for online drift rooms. Check the host of the room your in. And use what ever car class that user has and you will not have any issues and you will have a much better experience.

Going in my sig !

I have never once been kicked out of a drift room for hopping in my Blitzen B4 but I have to say most people would never even think to take that car out drifting in the first place. You ask why do I drift a AWD. Well my mom owns a Legacy Outback and I love to slide it around in the snow so if I can recreate that feeling in a game with the same platform I'm excited to do so. Unlike some of you I actually find AWD cars harder to "drift". This maybe because I expect them to drift like RWD cars but to me there are always advantages and disadvantages. So a AWD car is harder to initiate a drift (I'm not talking a simple rear wheel lock which is easily done by e-brake a true dynamic drift is much harder to initiate). Yet AWD is easier to carry through a drift that was over initiated. It's all up to perspective and I can see the difficulties and advantages of both. I'll sum it up for everyone: most that try to drift in an AWD car really do not have advanced drifting techniques down. People who drift RWD cars at least half the time do have some advanced drift technique. When you drift with others you should be able to tell how well they control their drift whether it be RWD car (most of the time pretty good technique) or a 10/90 split (mostly don't have great technique). If you have not perfected RWD drifting you cannot even begin to comprehend the amount of skill needed to truly drift an AWD car. It could be found easier if you are less experienced or more challenging with advanced techniques depending on your perspective.

In other words it's frowned apon because it is mostly used as a crutch for people who have not yet developed their drifting skills to a high level.

Also 4x4 is usually referring to 4WD that can be switched to 2WD like in 4x4 trucks where as AWD means full time 4WD and that it cannot be switched to 2WD just to clarify.

Good write up... but 90% of all wheel sliders use the handbrake. Usually while sideways down a straight in my Silvia or Lexus, Mr AWD drag races up to my side, before locking on the handbrake and wacking me into the dirt... I enjoy Gymkhana-ing (is that a word) AWD cars but drifting should be done in RWD's IMO. I have no problem with experienced Four wheel sliders who drive them like a RWD but n00bs with a handbrake? forget it!

agreed 👍

You have no clue what you are talking about. Gymkhana is similar to Autocross. Gymkhana is not a "type of slide". Here's a clip from GRIP Video Mag.

about 20 seconds in... "gymkhana is like a fusion of autocross and drifting"

Sorry dude but sliding is a part of drifting & apparently drifting is a part of gymkhana...

Sorry dude but I was correcting Tuzmyfuz80 saying AWD sliding is called gymkhana.

I can understand you trying to correct me, taking me out of context. Most people here in the states are surrounded by this bloke called Ken Block who in every one of his video says drift over and over. His car is AWD/4WD so a sport AWD/4WD "drifters" believe is proper drifting is non other than Gymkhana. Does that make any sense. This whole problem is really due to what people see as drifting and with Ken Block saying those words over and over people start to believe that Gymkhana is drifting, which it is not entirely. People start taking out subarus believing that they are properly "drifting" when in fact they are not.

Sorry dude, i just read your whole post. I didn't actually read it when i saw it. I only read the gymkhana part which caught my eye as I was skimming threw the pages. I never read the whole post. My bad.

it is all good most people do that, most of the time when it involves such an argument/discussion
